Networking and social connections are extremely important in the business world, and my involvement with the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE) and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has truly highlighted their value. As a member of CSAE, volunteering on a committee has not only broadened my professional network but also deepened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities in our field. It’s a vibrant community where sharing knowledge and support leads to growth for all members.

For extraverts, attending association events and meetings can be exhilarating. Sharing your experiences, learning from others and being an active participant can open up a number of doors. It’s important to remember that the power of networking lies as much in listening as it does in speaking.

Introverts, like myself, might find networking more challenging, but associations offer unique opportunities for meaningful one-on-one interactions. Preparing a few thoughtful questions beforehand can make initiating conversations easier. People appreciate a good listener and these individual interactions can leave a lasting impression. Volunteering on a committee or task force makes for an easy transition into building your business network.

Here are some universal tips that have helped me:

  • Be yourself. Authentic connections are more valuable and lasting
  • Always follow up. A simple LinkedIn or email message post-meeting can pave the way for stronger relationships
  • Engage actively. Taking on roles such as committee volunteering can significantly enhance your network visibility and membership value

My experience with CFIB has been equally beneficial. Their advocacy work has not only supported my small business in navigating through various challenges but has also provided invaluable business and HR resources. The amazing discounts offered by CFIB have saved my business significant amounts annually, reinforcing the value of membership in a very tangible way.

Whether you’re an extravert thriving in social settings or an introvert who prefers deeper dialogues, organizations like CSAE and CFIB offer platforms to connect, learn, and grow. They highlight the importance of building a professional community where support and collective growth are instrumental to professional success.

If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to explore joining associations relevant to your industry. The investment in your professional development and the opportunity to contribute to a broader community are invaluable.
